Digital SLR's

After shooting many years with a great, but aging film SLR, it's time to move up to a new dSLR.
I shoot mostly for personal enjoyment but occasionally get asked to do professional work for clients and friends. I like my little Canon S330 PS and it still takes great shots for a PS camera. I also have an older SLR that still works great with professional slide film.

Now that digital seems to be on par with most film cameras (in the 35 mm arena) and has the resolution for larger prints, it's time to save those pennies.

What to get - I'm currently looking at the Canon 20D. They have some wonderful lenses as well. I've looked at Nikon's offerings, but am a little disappointed compared with the Canon's digital line. In the end it's the person on the trigger, but it certainly helps to have some good equipment backing you up.

What do you shoot with and why? What are you looking to put in your bag next?

I shoot with a Nikon D70 (in fact all our photographers shoot Nikon so we are a little biased) but I love the results I get. I just shot some close ups of children and blew them up to 24x36 with amazing clarity. I have also read a lot about the new Nikon D2x and plan to make that my next purchase. I highly recommend "going digital." Especially if you enjoy working with photoshop CS. The results you can get are amazing and your clients will love it!

It's not so much going digital as it is digital in the SLR world. I personally think Canon does a better job with their digital cameras (having owned two up to this point) and the "L" lenses are the tops. Nikon does well in its own right and has produced some nice FM bodies over the years.

The Canon 5D that was announced recently looks great as it incorporates a full-framed sensor, but is pricey and only does 3 fps.

I'm also curious as to how you discovered my site (search engine, other, etc.)?

Thanks.

I know that people seem to be very brand loyal in the SLR world. Especially since the lenses from the non-digital SLR's usually fit the new digitals. I still love my Nikon though!

As far as the 3 fps with the new Canon, the Nikon D2X shots 5 fps. Additionally, it has the option of dropping the mega pixels to 6.8 and shooting 8 fps. However, I much prefer the larger variety of ISO speeds and white balance options on the Canon EOS-5D, not to mention the lower price tag! It sounds like they are both exceptional cameras and so the decision should be based on what you shoot most, what lenses you have, and where your brand loyalty lies.

You asked how I discovered your web site. Well, I have two sisters that were living in the Seattle area and were into biking and ran across an article you had written. They told me about it and so I "googled" you and came up with abovethedin.com. So, are you the Kurt Frampton from SLC? If so, I would love to hear how you are doing and what you are up to these days! Don't worry, I am not stalking you or anything, just wondering how you are doing, what you are up to, and how your life is turning out! I would love to hear from you anytime!
